Back to School- T Minus One Week!!

Hi! It’s Jilly. School starts ONE WEEK from today! Woooooo hoooo!! The kids are getting pretty excited about it. But, no one is more excited than this gal right here.

thisgalrighthere

The kids have been driving me absolutely CRAZY lately! School starts a MONTH later here than it does in Arizona, where we just moved from. So, not only are the kids trying to adjust to a totally new environment, but they also haven’t started back to school when they are used to! This results in a heightened amount of fighting, tattle tale-ing, chasing, hitting, and crying! Aye yie yie!!

one frustrated mama{picture taken while trying to get the kids to take that other picture of me, and they kept fussing & fighting}

I feel like John Lovitz is talking about me, although I don’t think ANYONE is reaping any benefits!

Last week I was having a really rough day and I texted my husband out of frustration. He was able to drop by during his lunch break to give me a hug and talk for a minute. When he had to leave and go back to work I felt like this:

SO, although I love my kids dearly, and will definitely have moments I miss them and worry about them while they're at school, you better BELIEVE I will be singing this tune next Thursday!

Don't miss a beat! Follow, Follow me!
I also like to Tweet!
I think rhyming’s neat.
(Now you probably think I’m a geek.)

150 Followers Celebration- Giveaway with Guilloche Vintage!

Hi! It's Jilly. I am SOOOOO excited to have reached 150 followers in Google Friend Connect! So excited, in fact, that I wanted to host a giveaway to say, "Thanks!".  Blogging is so much fun, and I love all the people I've met since I jumped in and started this crazy thing! I appreciate the support! I'm excited to continue on in this adventure!

I found this neat shop on Etsy called Guilloche Vintage. Ellen, the lovely lady behind the shop, has such a neat story about how she was inspired to start collecting & selling vintage jewelry. She says:

I first caught the vintage bug back in the 1980's when I was still in high school. There was a Salvation Army 20 minutes from where I lived and I used to go there a look at vintage clothing. My first vintage purchase was a black man's tuxedo coat from 1850. I don't know why. I just liked it. In college it continued. Vintage shoes, vintage records, vintage purses. Vintage, more vintage was always kind of a motto. I think I got the bug from my parents who were always going to auctions and from my Mom who was a garage sale fanatic. I even had a vintage paperback collection at one time. When I found out about etsy almost 3 years ago, I thought great vintage, here is something fun that I can do. I chose vintage costume jewelry because I want to have a specialty.  I like the whole handmade, vintage, fine art vibe that it has going for it. I think it's great. And I am glad that I opened my shop and will continue to work to try to improve my shop. I am always and forever trying to get better photos and better descriptions.  I love looking for vintage costume jewelry to sell. I love researching and learning about now jewelry styles and eras. It's always a kick.

There are so many cool pieces of jewelry in her shop. Some of my favorites are:

Vintage Lavender Beaded Single Strand Necklace-1970's

Vintage Lavender Beaded Single Strand Necklace-1970's

TARA Vintage Goldtone Flower Clip Earrings-1950's

TARA Vintage Goldtone Flower Clip Earrings-1950's

Vintage Goldtone Rope or Lariet Length Necklace with Gold Beads-1970's

Vintage Goldtone Rope or Lariet Length Necklace with Gold Beads-1970's

I talked with Ellen, and she was awesome enough to give all of you the chance to win this awesome vintage scarf clip, just in time for wearing with our fall scarves! Woot woot!!!

I know I would feel very chic wearing this fun accessory! One of you lucky people will actually get to wear it! Enter the Rafflecopter giveaway below, and good luck!!

Apple & Blueberry Salad with Sweet Vinaigrette Dressing

I originally posted this recipe as a guest post at DJ's Sugar Shack a couple months ago, but I really wanted to share this recipe with you guys, 'cause I love it so much. So, here it is. I hope you like it!

I love making salad. It just feels fresh, and it is so good for you. I always like to add at least one kind of fruit (preferably two-- one sweet & one tart), nuts, and cheese. Not only is it tasty, but it also looks "fancy" if you have company over or are taking a salad to a potluck.

Today I'm going to share with you an Apple & Blueberry Salad with Sweet Vinaigrette Dressing.

First, the salad.

salad3

Apple & Blueberry Salad
Ingredients:
1 head Romaine lettuce
1 small carton blueberries (if blueberries are not in season you can use the whole dried blueberries from Costco)
1/2 apple, thinly sliced (do NOT use Red Delicious! Seriously. No one should ever eat those. They are gross & mushy. That might just be my humble opinion, though.)
1/2 cup walnut bits & pieces, coarsely chopped
1/4 cup Feta cheese

saladingredients

Directions:
1) Break up the lettuce, wash it & spin it. Add to a medium-sized bowl.
2) Add the fruit, walnuts, and cheese to the bowl.
3) Serve and enjoy!

salad2

Now, for the dressing. The dressing has a back story. I got this recipe from my sister-in-law years and years ago. We had her salad at a family dinner once, then I called and begged her for the recipe months later when we were having friends over for dinner. I never knew the name of it, so it just says "Sara's Awesome Salad Dressing" on the index card I wrote the recipe on. Lol!

I knew Sara's dressing would be perfect for this salad, so I called her and asked if I could share it. Fortunately she gave her blessing! Here it is.

Sweet Vinaigrette Dressing, aka Sara's Awesome Salad Dressing
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Red Wine Vinegar
1/2 cup Sugar or your favorite sweetener (Splenda, honey, agave, etc.)
1/2 cup LIGHT olive oil- NOT EVOO!
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (I like Lea & Perrins)
1/2 tsp Paprika
1/4 tsp Onion powder
1/4 tsp Pepper

dressingingredients

Directions:
1) Pour ingredients in a salad dressing container or a jar with a tight fitting lid. Shake well to combine.
2) Serve over your favorite salad.
*Note: Contents will settle as it sits. It will divide into layers.

Just shake it again and you're good to go. :)

I hope you enjoy this salad. I know we do! Be sure to follow me here on the blog, on Facebook, on Twitter, or on Pinterest, so you don't miss anything! :)

Sometimes I link up at THESE lovely parties.

We decided to share our adventure as I let my Little Chefs have full control of the kitchen! They chose the recipes and execute every part they are safely able to do while I am constantly teaching and observing. No I did not go to culinary school. I'm just a Mom who wants to teach her Little Chefs how to cook. We are fully enjoying the memories we are creating!

My name is Kathy and I'm a follower of Christ, wife, stay-at-home mom, musician, dog lover, and aspiring techy. I've been married for three fast paced but lovable years and am the mother of 2 precious little girls. I enjoy reading, playing the piano, smelling lilacs, and above all things, organizing and researching about home life.  Prior to being a stay-at-home mom I was an elementary music teacher for 7 years and now continue my music education pursuits by directing a couple of area homeschool choirs. The formation of this blog marks the near beginning of our family journey and my lifelong pursuit to becoming a domestic diva drawing on the divine. My hope is that this blog evolves into a resource not only to share our experiences with our extended family but also to connect with others in the homeschool and Christian communities who desire to pursue a similar path. Similarly, I hope it becomes a blessing to your family and I thank you for reading!

Aren’t all these gals great?! I hope you’ll stop by their blogs and say “Hi!”. Thanks for reading!

Medical Monday- In the trenches

Somehow I stumbled upon these awesome blogs - Your Doctor's Wife and From: A Doctor's Wife  - and I love them! They blog all about what it's like as the wife of a doctor and a medical resident. I can commiserate because my husband just graduated from med school and started his first year of residency about a month ago.

First official day of residency. Woot woot!

Your Doctor's Wife and From: A Doctor's Wife have decided to do a weekly blog hop for medical/med life posts! It made me realize I should post more about my experiences "in the trenches" here on the 'ole blog.

I don't always think about, or know what to say about, our experience in medical school. I say "our" because when you are married to a student doctor it's a team effort! Not only do the students themselves make a lot of sacrifices, but you as the wife/husband/significant other/child/pet of the student make a lot of sacrifices as well.

I can't remember how many events we missed (including a sister's wedding), or how many date nights had to be canceled. I don't know how many days I was ready to ship my kids off to a pineapple farm and couldn't even call my husband because he was in class, or studying for the 4th test in a 3 day period.

There were times he was gone for a month or more on the other side of the country on a rotation. During one of those rotations I had to take all three kids with me to the ER late one night because Girl A stepped on a sawtooth picture hanger.

Sometimes he would be SO busy studying for a huge string of tests (which seemed to happen every.stinkin'.week) that the only opportunity we had to see him would be to take dinner over to the school and have dinner together as a family at the picnic tables outside. He would take half an hour to eat and play with the kids, then it was back to the 'ole grindstone!

But, we made it through school! He graduated! Woo hoo!!

Now, we just have to make it through residency, right?!?! Right.
